CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAMS CAN INSPIRE BUSINESS LEADERS
Much of the globe has been riveted by the physical bravado, drama and excellence of the World Cup in Brazil, this past month.  The event was intense because of the stakes of the game as well as the different coaching styles and players of each team.  This kind of competition is the perfect setting for an analogy of the relationship between team performance and leadership methods in the business world.
Recently, while working with a senior executive coaching client, we determined there were three factors evident both in World Cup competition and the task of creating excellence in the workplace.  Let's take a look at Mind Body Soul set (MBSset), RIsk and Focus on the whole team.  What can business leaders and their teams learn from these football matches?
1. Mind Body Soul Set
My client expressed how incredible it is to observe the MINDset, or brain activity, that creates high performance of a well-honed athlete or a successful employee when they are at the top of their game.  Then the question arose – is it just MINDset?  Take the formidable match between Costa Rica and the Netherlands.  Even after 120 minutes of strategic, focused and athletic fortitude of full time play, it came down to a penalty shootouts. It ended with the Netherlands winning 4-3 penalty shots.  This was a display of phenomenal focus, leadership and team connectedness.  It was obviously more than simply MINDset.
MINDset entails logic, focus, analytical and strategic thinking, skill and creativity.  What I like to call "BODYset" is the energy driver for the mind and needs to be in top form to sustain long intense athletic and working moments.  It does this with healthy eating, sufficient sleeping, periods of relaxation between intense periods and hydration, to name a few.  Underneath that, in a very deep layer of our human existence, is the "SOULset".  This is the passion, greater purpose and drive that convinces the mind and the body to perform extraordinary feats.  The game between the Netherlands and Costa Rica displayed the powerful combination of Mind Body Soul Sets working harmoniously together for both teams.
A successful organization depends on,
  • Its employees, teams and leadership being connected to the MBSset.
  • looking at what is the true purpose and narrative (Soul) of your team or project or organization
  • linking/aligning your narrative to your strategies
  • focusing the Mind and the physical energy and health (Body) of your employees
  • keeping your eye on the ball at all costs
  • high effective and efficient performance

2. Risk
Football like many other sports it is about taking risks – as is business and life today.  During the final between Argentina and Germany, you saw how many strategic performance risks the German team took and it proved successful.
In the Netherlands / Costa Rica match, the Coach of the Netherlands team replaced the goalie for the penalty shootouts.  The intensity of this high stakes penalty shoot out can be and was an extremely risky disruptor mentally, physically and emotionally.  This was a bold move and extremely risky play that could have resulted either way – win or lose.  To move through a disruptive situation like this, it shows how much strength, focus and calm is needed from a Mind Body Soul Set (MBSSet) connection.  This can combat the fragile veneer of some who can fall prey to stress and nerves when the steeliness is truly needed.
Along with being disruptive, risk is about performing extremes and believing to expect the unexpected.  The Dutch coach and the team were working in the 1% extreme of winning or losing – the extraordinary - and not settling for the 99% of being ordinary.  This decision worked to their success.  Playing high stakes business or football is about being disruptive and working with extremes on the field or in the meetings rooms or externally with clients at times.  Risk is vital for growth and change.
In organizations, leaders and team leaders and the employees have to
  • take risks and create possible disruptive situations
  • expect the unexpected at all turns in a project, meeting or communication
  • often take uncomfortable risks for the sake of the organization moving forward – e.g.  downsizing or removing and changing people in influential positions; or taking creative or strategic decisions that have never been experienced before.
  • take full responsibility for your actions
  • go for the 1% = extraordinary!
3. Focus on the Entire Team
The semi-final between Brazil and Germany is a perfect example of giving power and success to a team's star players.  Brazil went into this game without injured superstar Neymar da Silva Santo and team captain Thiago Silva, who was benched after a yellow card penalty.  Without these key players the team wallowed in a state of negativity, wondering how they could possibly win.  You could see this through their emotions, body language and lack of connectedness as a team.
The game played out like a bizarre and disconnected horror movie for the Brazilians.  The Germans scored five goals within 30 minutes of the match, three of those within three minutes.  The game ended with a 7 to 1 unprecedented victory for Germany whose team was well connected to its MBSset and constantly took risks.  They could do no wrong.  The Brazilians were disconnected as a team and there was no sign of successful leadership.  Because of its focus on only two players, despite the fact that each member was an accomplished athlete, the team suffered as a whole.
Successful teams are made up of
  • strong and talented individuals of multiple skills and technique
  • leadership focused on a centered MBSset
  • management who put each employee in a position to thrive.
  • focusing on the team and not just on star
  • a strong purpose story that motivates and inspires
There are many other parallels that can be found in World Cup football and other elite sports.  There are pros and cons or positives and negatives to these thoughts in this article as are all articles.  Take a few moments to contemplate leadership, how your teams are functioning and the results you are getting in your organization.  Perhaps these three factors – MBSset (connection), Risk and Focus on the Whole Team can assist you in leading your team and organization to succeed and thrive.

Top 10 Football Teams

Coaching kids football at Under 9 and Under 10 becomes more constructive, and dare it be said, easier! Players should have developed a good understanding of the game and have sound football techniques covering the basics.
The kids football training sessions can be made more progressive because the players are more adaptable to different game and decision making situations. This means that the football coaching becomes more effective with players capable of increased decision making.
For under 9 and under 10 football players, you can expect the following characteristics:
Awareness – Kids football at this age will typically mean better understanding of their roles and on the pitch. Players are more aware of what is going on around them and can transfer knowledge from thefootball training ground to a game situation
Attention span – Always difficult this one – especially with kids football. Your players should slowly be less interested in picking worms and what is happening on the next pitch and be more attentive to what you have to say during your football coaching sessions. Try to hold their attention by encouraging questions and participation in demos.
Learning - Kids are like sponges at this age and they will pick up good and bad habits from everywhere. Expect them to turn up to football training with a trick or two they've learnt by watching a game on TV.Coaching of football skills and ball control in a short football training session is difficult so consider asking your junior fc players to do some football homework to improve their ball control and soccer skills. Holiday soccer schools in the half terms breaks are a good way to further improve the kids football skills.

Enthusiasm – For under 9's and under 10's they will have bundles of it. Encourage this enthusiasm. You'll notice that enthusiasm soon turns in to competitiveness – players realise the joy of winning. Nurture this but do not over labour it. Coaching for football success with too much emphasis on winning at this stage is too early.

Football coaching associations can be a good     resource of football training information and managers and football coaches who have achieved their level 1coaching football certificate should consider progressing to their level 2 coaching football badge to stay in front of the teams development.

A useful resource of football coaching information can be found at www.canyouplayfootball.com. There are plenty of free football training drills for kids football, youth football and senior football teams. Check-out the football drills database for under 9 football drills and under 10 football drills.

All The COLLEGE Football Teams

The West Virginia Mountaineers, West Virginia University's (WVU's) football team is one of the most successful in the history of the game yet has never won a national championship. How did this happen? As of 2008, the Mountaineers have won thirteen conference championships and are considered the "winningest" team in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Mountaineers is West Virginia University's college football program. They are a member of the NCAA FBS division and are currently headed by head coach Bill Stewart as of 2008. Stewart is the Mountaineer's 32d head coach. West Virginia University used to the classified as a College Division beginning in the 1937-1938 season. By the 1939 season up t0 1972, West Virginia was classified under the University Division. In the 1973-1977 season, WVU was under Division I. From 1978 until the present, they have been under Division I-A. The mountaineers have played mainly as an independent collegefootball team from the time of its inception in 1891 until 1990, playing only a short while in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1925 to 1927 and then later on in the Southern Conference from 1950 to 1967. From 1892 to 1918, WVU did not belong to any conference. Since 1991, after being reclassified as a Division I Independent from 1973 to 1977 and a Division I-A Independent from 1978 to 1990, the team currently competes in the Big East Conference.
The West Virginia Mountaineers football team has a pretty impressive record of 663-442-45, yet is not that quite successful, having never won a national championship. Ironically, the Mountaineers are the "winningest" team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), ahead of Miami University and Virginia Tech.

In the 1988 season, the Mountaineers were undefeated in the regular season, paving their way to the National Championships in the Fiesta Bowl against the University of Notre Dame. In 1993, they once again got into the bowl game, facing the University of Florida in the 1993 Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers lost both championships, losing to Notre Dame 34-21 and to Florida 41-7. Both the 1988 and 1993 undefeated seasons were led by head coach Don Nehlen. To date, the worst season for the Mountaineers was in 1960 when they had a winless record against ten teams.

From its inception, the Mountaineers have won thirteen conference championships, eight wins in the Southern Conference and five wins in the Big East Conference. In the 2007 season, they got a No. 1 Poll ranking following week 13, from the coaches poll. They have participates in a total of 27 bowl games and has a standing record of 12-15. They have competed in the Sugar bowl three times, in the Peach Bowl four times, in the Fiesta Bowl two times, and the Gator Bowl six times. In BCS bowl games, they are 2-0 winning under quarter Patrick White and running back Steve Slaton.

2005 and 2006 were great seasons for the Mountaineers. They achieved the first-ever eleven consecutive wins in the school's history. The 2007 season was also not half bad, ranking in No. 3 at the start of the season, which was the highest preseason raking in WVU history. They would be eventually ranked No. 1 in the Coaches poll following the 13th week and finished the season with eleven consecutive wins after winning the Fiesta Bowl.
